Gaden Trisur Lungrik Namgyal

Gaden Trisur Lungrik Namgyal was born in 1927 in Kham (eastern Tibet). Later he joined Gaden Shartse Monastery where he had learnt all the basic monastic education and ordained at the age of 7.

Venerable Rinpoche Lungrik Namgyal acquired the title of Geshe Lharampa (Ph.D) and Geshe Ngarampa (specialist in tantra) after forty years of intensive study and practice in all field of Buddhist sutra and tantra including: The Five major Treaties of Buddhist Philosophy and as well as extraordinary monastic education which also includes numerous sacred rituals.

Since 1959, after reestablishment of Tibetan people in India, he has continued engaging in countless Dharma activities in abroad and in India, especially in 1986, these remarkable qualities had lead the Dalai Lama to choose him as the representative of Buddhism in Ecumenical Encounters of Assisi interfaith meetings convened on the initiative of Pope John Paul II in Italy.

In 1983, His Holiness the Dalai Lama appointed him as Abbot of Gyuto Tantric University and in 1992 as Abbot of Gaden Shartse Monastery, South India, which is one of the most eminent and well -known monastic colleges of the Gelug sect.

In 1995, the Venerable Rinpoche Lungrik Namgyal was elevated to Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche and became the second most respected spiritual leader after Gaden Tripa of Gelug tradition.

On January 20, 2003, the Dalai Lama, during his Kalachakra Empowerment in Bodhgaya, has pronounced the appointment of Ven Lungrik Namgyal as the 101 Gaden Tripa, (lineage successor of JeTsongkhapa) and official spiritual leader of all Gelug sect for a period of seven years. Later the Official Enthronement Ceremony was held in traditional way at Gaden Shartse Monastery with the presence of numerous important figures of both spiritual and politics.

The Major Gelug colleges are, three great seats-Gaden, Drepung, Sera and Gyuto, Gyumed Tantric University and so forth.

His Holiness Trisur Rinpoche currently lives in Paris, where he transmits precious Buddhist teachings of his lineage in Thar Due Ling Dharma center in Chelles, France which he founded in 1980.
